Sanderling by Ned Bohman

To start the evening, Max Malmquist with National Audubon and Blake Barbaree with Point Blue Conservation Science will give a presentation: Intermountain West Shorebird Surveys – Replicating Shorebird Surveys of the Past to Conserve Shorebirds into the Future. Wetlands and Saline Lakes of The Intermountain West provide an interconnected network of habitat and food resources to millions of migratory shorebirds that utilize the interior portion of the Pacific Flyway in North America.

Red-necked Phalarope by Ned Bohman

From 1989 to 1995, researchers at Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now Point Blue Conservation Science) led an effort to document shorebird populations and distribution across the region during peak spring and fall migration.

Thirty years later, landscape level changes to habitat and surface water availability from drought, climate change, and water diversions have made replicating this effort a priority for conservation organizations and wildlife agencies across the west. During this talk, Audubon and Point Blue will provide an update on the project, preliminary data, and insights from the surveys after its first five seasons.

Following their presentation, Lauren Whitenack will lead a shorebird identification workshop. Lauren will cover identification of expected shorebird species in our area. We will use specimens from the University of Nevada, Reno's museum collection.
